DIET is the realization of one of the five
components of a centrally sponsored scheme namely reconstructing and reorganisation of teacher
education, approved in October 1987. DIET is the most significant educational
intervention in the country, while the NCERT came up in the 1960,s and the
state councils of education research and training came up in 1970,s, the need
for a third tier of training and resource support structure, right at the
district level was genuinely felt in order to improve the quality of Basic
education. As a result DIET’s were set up in almost all the districts of all
the states in the country. DIET’s in
District Institute
of Education & Training, Amritsar was established by converting Junior
Basic Training School, Verka, Amritsar w.e.f.
28-11-1990 vide memo No. 17/7/1990 T.T. date 6-2-1990 from Director,
S.C.E.R.T., Punjab, Chandigarh. The education department has assigned different
Training Programmes such as - Pre service
Teachers Training, In-Service Teacher Training, to improve the quality
of elementary education and create a desirable environment within the district
in regard to enroll more and more children of school going age and pave the way
for retention of those who are admitted in the school. Apart from this, DIET
DIET’S MISSION is to provide academic and resource support at the
grass root level for achieving quality and universal elementary education.
DIET’S ROLE Pursuit of excellence shall reflect in all DIET’s
activities. Besides its own excellence, it shall help the elementary education
achieve excellence. Each DIET will be a model educational institution in the
district in terms of meticulous, efficient and effective planning and execution
of functions, harmonious and creative organizational climate, maintenance of a clean and attractive campus.
DIET’S
TRANSACTIONAL APPROACH shall be child centered and activity based, making
education a joyful, innovative and satisfying learning activity rather than a
system of rote, cheerless and authoritarian instruction.
DIET’S SPECIAL
TARGET GROUPS include girls and
women/ Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes/ Minorities/ the handicapped/
other educationally disadvantaged groups such as working children, slum
dwellers, inhabitants of hilly, desert and other inaccessible areas.
DIET’S THREE MAIN
FUNCTIONS
(i) Training (both of induction level as well as continuing varieties)
(ii) Resource support (extension/guidance, development of materials, aids, evaluation tools, etc.) and
(iii) Action research

ACTIVITIES IN DIET,

IN-SERVICE
TEACHER TRAINING
The Amritsar DIET has undertaken the mammoth task of imparting quality training to teachers and education Guarantee Scheme Volunteers for Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan. Every elementary teacher is being trained for 20 days under various programmes like teaching learning material (T.L.M.) – a 5 days programme for inculcating qualities in teachers for developing teaching aids according to local environment and student needs, 10 days programme of Modules developed by Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) on the current topics, a 5-day training programme on Minimum Level of Learning (M.L.L.). Under this programme teachers are educated about psychological needs of children, population education and methodology. A basic knowledge of information technology is also given to keep them in touch with the latest developing trends in the modern era, a 3-days subject wise workshop is also organised to improve the subject knowledge, attitude and approach of the teachers. In these 20 days programme, teachers are trained in every aspect of education and being equipped with latest teaching aids and materials to increase the interest of both teachers and students and being helped to develop best teacher-learner relations.

20 Teachers of Govt Secondary Schools in Every Batch. Till

TRAINING
TO VEDC MEMBERS
All villages in the Amritsar DIET have
Education Development Committees. There are seven members of VEDC. SSA has
decided to train at least 4 members of VEDC. Two days training is imparted to
these VEDC members. A new Mantra-Empowering the Villages-Govt is keen to
achieve all round development through the empowerment of village panchayants.
Illiteracy and lack of management skills among the rural people is the main
road block in its way. A two-days training programme has been undertaken at
block level. Presently, DIET is conducting training programmes in 26 blocks of

FOLLOW-UP
DIET teams visit the schools, VEDCs, EGS Centres to support and guide the teachers, members to implement the national programmes in true national spirit. The teachers and members are guided to follow the methodology they are told during training programmes and solve their problems regarding education on the spot.

WORKSHOPS
A 3-Days workshop was organised at DIET,
Verka,
The faculty of DIET, Verka, Amritsar has also been actively involved in the development of Bridge courses for out of school, children of Punjab which are being developed by DEP-SSA (An IGNOU- MHRD, GOI Project), and DEP-SSA, Punjab.
